Game Design
Star Riot is a two-player strategy card game that centers on launching powerful starfighters, upgrading them, and destroying the opposing player’s space station. The project included a game logo, playing cards, rule booklet, packaging, and social media posts leading up to the game’s release date. Photography of the components and game set up was also completed for use in promotional materials. Visual elements, such as color, type, and image, come together to create a cohesive branding system.
Logo
The logo design employs a futuristic sans-serif typeface that corresponds with the game’s outer space theme. A starfighter was also included in the “o” to emphasize the importance of ships to the gameplay.
Playing Cards
A system of symbols and colors designates the different card types in the game. Icons over images of outer space appear to jump off the dark black background. A simple sans-serif was chosen as a secondary typeface for contrast and readability.
Game Setup
The game is set up with players facing each other and their hands hidden. Each player has a station card as well as a ship stats card to keep track of ship health and shields. Active ships are played in the middle with any upgrades placed on them. Ship card piles are placed face up on the right side of the play area. Weapon, augment, and tactic card piles are placed face down on the left side of the play area.
Rule Booklet
This 20-page rule booklet provides information on set up and gameplay. Diagrams accompany text to explain game mechanics, symbols, and more. The look and feel of the rule booklet follows the card design.
Box Design
The box design is simple and clean, with the logo as the main graphic element. The symbols under the logo represent the five different card types. A white speckled texture over black was used to evoke stars in a night sky.
Social Media
Social media images were posted leading up to the game launch. The posts utilized product photography and the bright colors used in the card and box designs. Each post explained more about the theme and gameplay.
Game Icons
Icons used in Star Riot materials (logo, rule booklet, and playing cards) are derived from the icons on https://game-icons.net/. The original versions of the icons are licensed by their creators under the terms of the CC BY 3.0 license at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/. All of the icons from game-icons.net were modified.
